Ten years ago I stepped off the ferry onto Phangan. The one who walked ashore back then and the one writing these lines now are different people, and this short postscript is about how far apart they’ve drifted in the meantime.
Indecently many things happened to me here for the first time: I started projects and struck up friendships, accumulated illusions and diligently squandered them on disappointments, and it was here that my first living son was born. For some reason I figured that a place I’d put so much into would one day pay it all back with interest, and that if I came back years later, something big would be waiting for me, something to match the scenery.
